Barbara Arrighi currently serves as the Deputy Chief of Campus Police at Mt. Holyoke College
in South Hadley, Massachusetts and has been in that position since 1974. She has been an
Adjunct Instructor in Self-Defense Physical Education at Mt. Holyoke since 1975 and has
presented police training programs in police defensive tactics, and domestic violence since
1972. Barbara holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice Administration from the
University of Massachusetts and has been studying Shito-Ryu Karate since 1972 where she has
achieved the level of 7th degree black belt. She was given the title of Kyoshi by Headmaster
Mabuni Kenzo, Soke. In 2015 Barbara was awarded her 8th degree black belt and the Title of
Hanshi (teacher of masters). Barbara has also been a certified Kubaton Instructor since 1990
within the International Karate Association. She has achieved the level of 5th degree black
belt and given the title of Shihan by Headmaster Takayuki Kubota, Soke in that discipline.
Barbara has been with R.A.D. Systems since 1993. She is a certified Instructor in the Basic,
Advanced, Keychain, Weapons Defense, and R.A.D. for Seniors programs. In 1998, Barbara was
promoted to Instructor Trainer in the Keychain Defense Options Program and in 2000 she was
promoted to Staff Instructor in that same system. She is also the recipient of the Susan B.
Anthony award, and is a charter member of the R.A.D. Systems Hall of Fame.
Theresa has been a R.A.D. Instructor since April of 1991, where she attended the very first
R.A.D. Instructors Program. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminology from
Indiana University of PA and then worked 10 years as the Administrative Supervisor for the
Security Department at Virginia Wesleyan College and is currently the Benefactor Coordinator
at that institution. Theresa was a Staff Instructor in the Basic Physical Defense System,
the editor of R.A.D.'s newsletter, The Instructor's Voice, one of the original
Executive Board members, and a Susan B. Anthony Award recipient. Theresa was awarded
Executive Board Emeritus status in July 2015 and is a charter member of the R.A.D. Systems
Hall of Fame.
Scott Barlow became a Basic Physical Defense R.A.D. Instructor in 1991. He has since obtained
certifications in the Advanced Self-Defense and Aerosol Defense Options programs. Scott
continues his involvement with R.A.D. programming as an Instructor Trainer in the Basic
Physical Defense Program and Staff Instructor with the Aerosol Defense Options Program.
He has also been involved with Law Enforcement Training for many years and is retired
from the Newport News, Virginia Police Department and recently retired Chief of Police
of Culpeper, Virginia Police Department. Scott is currently the Deputy Director of the
Hampton Roads Regional Criminal Justice Academy in Newport News, Virginia.
Jan received her Associates Degree in Law Enforcement in 1974 and joined the US Army Military
Police Corp in 1975. She served in Germany, Korea and then returned to civilian life as a
Corrections Officer at the women's prison in Kansas. She attended the first R.A.D.
Instructor's Program in April 1991 while working at Christopher Newport University
Police Department. Jan then transferred to The College of William and Mary Police
Department where she primarily investigated sexual assaults. In 1997, Jan received her
M.Ed. in Counseling and is currently the Crisis Intervention Specialist at a domestic
violence/sexual assault shelter, emergency services counselor for the community service
board in Gloucester, Virginia Jan was awarded Executive Board Emeritus in July 2009, and
is a Charter Member of the R.A.D. Hall of Fame.
Debbie began her involvement with RAD Systems in 1993 as a basic student. In 1996 she obtained her certification as a Basic Physical Defense Instructor followed soon after with Advanced Self Defense Instructor certification. Debbie has continued to develop her skills by obtaining certifications in both the Keychain Defense Options and Replicating Adverse Dynamics programs. She is currently an Authorized Instructor Trainer standing in both the Basic Physical Defense and Advanced Self Defense programs. In 2016 Debbie was promoted to Staff Instructor for the Basic Physical Defense Program. Debbie is a Susan B. Anthony recipient as well as a charter member of the R.A.D. Hall of Fame. She is an integral part of the R.A.D. Canada team and currently serves as Region 11 Director.
Layne is a retired Campus Law Enforcement Officer currently employed as a Security Consultant
for the Edmonton Public School Board. He became involved with R.A.D. Systems in 1992 as a Basic
Physical Defense Instructor, and the first Canadian instructor in the organization. He and his
wife, Debbie, played a significant role in bringing R.A.D. Systems to Canada. Layne earned his
Instructor Trainer certification in the basic program in 1993 and has since achieved Instructor
Trainer standing in Advanced Physical Defense, R.A.D. For Men and Replicating Adverse Dynamics
with Instructor certifications in other R.A.D. programs as well. Layne is a Susan B. Anthony
Award recipient and a Hall of Fame Member. Layne was promoted to Staff Instructor for
Replicating Adverse Dynamics at the 2013 Conference in San Antonio, Texas.
Jon Brill joined the R.A.D. Systems alliance upon completing the Women’s Basic Physical Defense
Instructor Certification course in April 1993. Since then he has acquired Instructor certifications in
Advanced Self-Defense, Aerosol Defense Options, R.A.D. for Men, and R.A.D. for Seniors. He
has also participated in Replicating Adverse Dynamics and Crime Prevention for the R.A.D. Instructor
programs. He was appointed as the first State Director for Pennsylvania in December 1995 and was
then named as the first Director for Region 2 in July 1996. He held the position as Director of Region 2
until 2006. Jon achieved the status of Instructor Trainer for the Women’s Basic Physical Defense System
after attending the first Instructor Trainer Development Program in July 1995 and was promoted to Staff
Instructor at the R.A.D. Conference in July 2006. He currently serves the organization as the Instructor
Trainer Coordinator. Jon was a recipient of the Aggressor award in 1999, the Susan B. Anthony award in
2002 and the TIV Contributor award in 2005. He was named as a charter member to the R.A.D. Systems
Hall of Fame in 2008.
Archie became a part of our alliance in 1991 and has been a rock for us ever since. Through his
dedication and hard work, Archie rose through the ranks, becoming R.A.D.'s very first Instructor
Trainer and after some time was promoted to Staff Instructor in the Basic Physical Defense System
where he has served as wise council to many of us over the years. It was also Staff Instructor
Griffin's idea to conduct an training conference back in 1995. He is an Instructor Trainer
in Advanced Self Defense and RAD For Men, a Hall of Fame Charter Member and R.A.D. Susan B.
Anthony Recipient. Archie recently retired from the University of Maryland at Baltimore Police
Department after twenty-five years of service in the law enforcement community.
Jim Helms served in the United States Marine Corps for four years (1989-1993) as a Military Police
Correctional Specialist. After receiving an Honorable Discharge from the Marine Corps, Jim worked as
the Security Coordinator for the University of Miami (FL) (1994-2001); during his tenure at the
University of Miami he received training in CPTED (Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design),
Basic Crime Prevention, and became certified as a R.A.D. Basic Physical Defense Instructor (1996).
Jim has since become certified in additional systems within the R.A.D. Systems network to include:
Advanced Self-Defense Instructor, Keychain Defense Options Instructor, and Replicating Adverse
Dynamics Instructor. Additionally, Jim is an Instructor Trainer for both the Basic Physical Defense
and Advanced Self-Defense systems. In 2011 Jim was appointed as a Staff Instructor for Replicating
Adverse Dynamics, and is a recipient of R.A.D.'s Susan B. Anthony award. Jim is currently employed
as a law enforcement officer in the South Florida area.
Sheri has been with R.A.D. Systems since it began in 1989. She has undergraduate and master's degrees
from Radford University and started her career in Student Affairs at Old Dominion University and The
College of William and Mary. From 1994, she worked full time as the Systems Coordinator for R.A.D.
Systems and the Academy Coordinator for the Tidewater Academy Law Enforcement Training Division
until 1999. As a Staff Instructor for the Basic Physical Defense
Program, Sheri was an integral part of the development of these programs specifically and the first
Executive Board Member appointed by the R.A.D. Systems Founder. Sheri was inducted into the R.A.D.
Systems Hall of Fame in 2006, was the very first recipient of R.A.D.’s prestigious Susan B. Anthony
award in 1993 and was awarded Executive Board Emeritus in July 2009. She is currently the Registrar
for the City of Charlottesville, Virginia.
Dale King is a Law Enforcement Information Coordinator with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI).
He also serves as a subject matter expert (SME) assisting the FBI CJIS Division in development of Law
Enforcement National Data Exchange (N-DEx) computer based training (CBT) modules.
Dale has been in law enforcement for more than twenty-nine years, spending more than twenty-one years
with The University of Tennessee Police Department in Knoxville. Some of Dale’s duties during his
career at UTPD included supervision of Training, Crime Prevention, NCIC/TIES and TIBRS Operations, and
Communications. Dale has presented more than 1,500 crime prevention programs and training seminars in
twenty-one states. Active in self-defense training for 36 years, he was first certified as a
self-defense instructor in 1974 (YMCA, Jamestown, New York). In 1992, Dale and Keith Lambert attended
the R.A.D. Basic Instructor certification class in Charlottesville, VA. They were appointed to the
position of R.A.D. Instructor Trainer (BPD) in August 1993. In 1995, he assisted in the development of
the training curriculum for R.A.D. Keychain Defense Options, and was appointed KDO Staff Instructor.
Dale also trains law enforcement officers and civilians in the use of the Kubaton. Dale is a charter
member of the R.A.D. Hall of Fame.
Tina Lamb attended a Basic student class for the first time in 2006. After having returned to the
class multiple times, Tina became a certified instructor in 2007. Since then, she has remained
dedicated to providing safety education and self-defense training by teaching the Basic and Advanced
Self-Defense programs, Keychain, Weapons Defense, and R.A.D. for Men at the University of Florida
Police Department. Tina also teaches in rural communities around North Central Florida. She is a
Staff Instructor in Advance Self-Defense and an Instructor Trainer in the Basic Physical Defense
program. Tina is a Susan B. Anthony recipient and currently an administrator in Enrollment
Management at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida.
After serving his country in the United States Army as an Air Assault Instructor, during which he
spent time with the Old Guard Presidential Escort Unit, Trent began his career as a law enforcement
professional. He started as a deputy with the Fairfax County Sheriff’s Department and since transferred
to a mid-sized municipal police department in Northern Virginia where he has spent the past 19 years.
Trent is a certified Instructor within his department as well as currently being assigned as an Academy
Staff Instructor at a regional police academy where he is responsible for training law enforcement
recruits from area police departments, sheriff’s departments, fire marshalls and animal control officers.
Trent became certified as a R.A.D. Basic Physical Defense Instructor in November of 1996 and has since
been promoted to an Instructor Trainer in that system as well as become certified in the Advanced Self-
Defense System. Trent is also a Staff Instructor in the Replicating Adverse Dynamics System and has 15
years of experience in reality based training at the local and federal law enforcement levels, as well as
within civilian personal safety programming.
Catherine Rumsey began her law enforcement career as a patrol officer with the Minot, North Dakota
Police Department. After three years there, she moved to Maine and began working as a patrol
officer for the University of Maine in Orono, Maine. Catherine became a certified R.A.D. Instructor
in 1994, where she taught numerous Basic programs on campus before leaving the department. In
1997 Catherine was hired as a patrol officer for the Bangor Police Department in Bangor, Maine. She
brought the R.A.D. program to her new department and has been actively teaching R.A.D. since then.
She became certified to teach the Advanced, Aerosol, Keychain, and R.A.D. for Men programs.
Catherine is also an Authorized Instructor Trainer in the R.A.D. Systems Basic Physical Defense Program
for Women. While working with the Bangor Police Department, Catherine worked in the patrol division
and the detective’s division as a Domestic Violence Investigator. In 2001, she became certified as
a polygraph examiner. In 2008, after 5 years as the Domestic Violence Investigator, Catherine was
promoted to Sergeant and became the first woman in the history of her department to be promoted
to a supervisory position. During her entire time with Bangor Police, Catherine was involved with
community policing projects including the Police Activities League, Special Olympics, and the Triad
program. These programs allowed her to meet and educate children and senior citizens on various crime
prevention topics. A charter member of the R.A.D. Systems Hall of Fame and Susan B. Anthony award
recipient, in 2004 Catherine presented a training block at the R.A.D. Systems International Training
& Certification Conference on working with Senior Citizens. After a great deal of research and pilot
programming between Catherine and R.A.D. Systems Founder Larry Nadeau, the R.A.D. for Seniors Program
was born. Catherine is the Co-Founder and Program Director of that program.
Anthony Solano certified in R.A.D. Basic Physical Defense for Women in 1999. Anthony is also certified
in Advanced Self-Defense, Aerosol Defense Options, Keychain/Flashlight Defense Options, S.A.F.E.,
and R.A.D. on Domestic Violence. In 2001, Anthony attended the first R.A.D. for Men Instructor
course at the R.A.D. Systems Training and Certification Conference in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Anthony spent the following three years developing updates to the educational curriculum of Resisting
Aggression with Defense for Men and in 2004 joined the R.A.D. Systems instructional staff. Anthony is a
Susan B. Anthony recipient and currently works at Montgomery College in Germantown, Maryland as a
professor and distance counselor.
Casey Wood started her R.A.D. journey as a teenager when she attended the Basic student
class with her Mother and Grandmother. She returned many times to the Basic class to practice
until 2005, when she was able to attend an instructor certification course. She began teaching
in the Orlando area while still attending college at the University of Central Florida. She
continued her development by becoming certified in the Advanced, Keychain, and Replicating
Adverse Dynamics programs. In 2014, she moved to Denham Springs, Louisiana to work full time
for R.A.D. Systems International Headquarters. She is a Staff Instructor in the Basic Physical
Defense program and an Instructor Trainer in the Keychain Defense Options program. She
currently travels around the country training new instructors for R.A.D. Systems and works in
the Headquarters office when she is in Louisiana.
Kathy is a former City of Buffalo and Virginia Beach Police Officer with 14 years experience. She became
a R.A.D. Instructor in 1996 and has since become a Staff Instructor in Basic Physical Defense, Advanced
Self-Defense, and Replicating Adverse Dynamics. An Instructor Trainer in both the Aerosol Defense Options
and R.A.D. for Men programs, Kathy was awarded R.A.D. System’s coveted Susan B. Anthony award in
2003. Kathy is also certified as a Personal Fitness Specialist through the Cooper Institute of Aerobics
Research. She is a former Adjunct Instructor with Heckler and Koch’s International Training Division, is currently a Staff Instructor with the National Academy of Defense Education in Denham Springs,
Louisiana and has taught defensive tactics skills on a national level.
